Nationwide Building Society credit cards

Nationwide Building Society offers what at first appears to be a typical credit card – however, there are multiple benefits other lenders do not provide, because Nationwide takes a very consumer-friendly approach.

Firstly, Nationwide charges only very limited fees abroad, with none in Europe, and only 1% abroad.

From the Nationwide website:

Nationwide continues to offer “commission-free” foreign transactions.

“Commission-free” means that we do not add any additional charges for exchanging currency which are designed to generate profit for the Society. We do, however, pass on any fee we incur from our card scheme providers for processing transactions in certain currencies (generally those outside of the European Economic Area and Turkey and Israel) other than sterling.

The fee is currently 1.00% and it will be included in the sterling amount shown on your statement.

Secondly, Nationwide make a point of you paying off debts with the highest interest first – so if you have multiple cards, and one is higher than another, the higher interest card will be paid off first.

From the Nationwide website:

What does Order of Payments mean?

Order of Payments (or OOPs) relates to the way credit card providers allocate your payments towards your credit card bill. Different credit card transactions are charged at different interest rates. For example at Nationwide -

* Introductory purchase and balance transfer offers are charged at 0%
* Ongoing purchases and balance transfers are charged at
16.9% APR typical
* Cash advances are charged at 27.9%

When a Nationwide credit card customer makes a payment to their credit card we, unlike most other credit card providers pay off the debt being charged at the highest interest rate, before that charged at a lower interest rate.

However, most competitors allocate payments in the opposite way.
